of Local 916 - 1950's through 1966

Mid-1950s:
Springfield
office is located at 619 North Grand Avenue. Membership is approximately
2,000.
During
this time, a great number of companies in central Illinois were unorganized
- construction enterprises such as ready mixes, the soft drink and dairy
plants, automotive companies, and large companies such as Atlas Mattress,
Pegwill Packing, and Springfield Dressed Beef.
June 26,
1958:
Local 916
establishs an Executive Board pay of $10.00 per meeting plus mileage.
October
1958:
Local 916
began sending memorial bibles to deceased members instead of flowers.
November
1958:
Jacksonville
branch office closes.
June 3, 1964:
Another
revised charter is issued on June 3, 1964, to change the name of the
Local to, " Drivers, Clerks, Office, Warehousemen and Allied Employees".
May of 1966:
The Local
purchases land and an existing building at 2701 No. Dirksen Parkway
in Springfield for $75,000. The new location allowed for additional
space for the rapidly growing Local.
The Hall
was dedicated on September 11th, 1966. The grand opening was October
8, 1966. The bronze dedication plaque, with the names of the Executive
Board and Building Committee is still on the building today.
Another
bronze plaque hangs next to it, re-dedicating the building to the memory
of the great Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa.
